CHICAGO – In the latest available U.S. Census figures, Illinois ranks #5 nationwide in the number of manufacturing employees.
Over the past five years, the number of Illinois manufacturing employees has hovered slightly about the half a million mark.
California numbered 1,119,896 in its manufacturing workforce, Texas at 725,255, Ohio at 642,945 and Michigan at 555,005.
Illinois ranked five with 538,183 manufacturing employees.
Coming close behind was Pennsylvania with 522,221 in manufacturing.
In 2017, the population of Pennsylvania surpassed Illinois, making Pennsylavnia the nation’s fifth most populated state and Illinois the sixth.
